Trading Magic Items
The rules for trading magic items can be found on page 3 of ALPG 2026.2 (see 📄Documents). Below is an expanded explanation, including some edge cases and additional information that addresses common questions.
The Rules
Characters may trade magic items between each other.
When making a trade:
- Each character gives one (and only one) item to the other character,
- Both items must be of the same rarity (rare for rare, common for common, etc.)
- Both characters pay 5 Downtime Days each, and
- Both characters must be of the same AL campaign (Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, etc.)
Consumables (potions, spell scrolls, etc.) cannot be traded. Non-magical items cannot be traded. Gold (money) cannot be traded.
You can trade magic items between two of your own characters. Each character still pays 5 Downtime Days.
Two characters participating at the same table can trade magic items. Each character still pays 5 Downtime Days.
Only items of the following rarities can be traded:
- Common
- Uncommon
- Rare
- Very Rare
- Legendary
Magical items of any other rarity cannot be traded (eg. Unique, Artifact).
Magical items that were created by the character, either through spells, class features, a Bastion, or using consumables, cannot be traded.
Some examples:
- You can trade one Common magic item for one Common magic item.
- You can trade one Legendary magic item for one Legendary magic item.
- You cannot trade a Very Rare item for a Rare item.
- You cannot trade one item for two items.
- A Forgotten Realms character cannot trade with a Dragonlance character.
- You cannot craft a magic item using your Bastion and trade that item.
Where to Trade
If you’re looking for places to trade with other people, here you go.
Discord Servers
Many Adventurers League Discord Servers have channels in which you can post your available items.
The Adventurers League subreddit on Reddit has a trading post.
Logging Your Trades
Once your trade is complete, make sure you add the trade to your logs.
See 📝Logging Your Adventures for general information about character logs.
Be sure the log includes as much as possible of the following:
- Date of the trade
- Player with which you traded
- Character with which you traded
- Item you gave away
- Item you received
- Date the other character received the item
- Adventure and DM (if the item was awarded from an adventure)
- Service award information (if the item was awarded from 🏆Service Awards)
Trading Posts
Some epics and other special events have something called a “Trading Post”. They used to be called “Fai Chen”. This is where players can trade magical items with the event coordinators. There’s usually a fixed list of items which you can receive in your trades.
The rules for Trading Posts are different than trading items player-to-player. Speak to your event coordinators for rules on Trading Posts.
Some Discord servers call their trading channel a “Trading Post”. That is not the same thing.
