Season 4, Curse of Strahd, Ravenloft, Forgotten Realms, What??

There are many questions about in which campaigns Season 4 (DDAL04) and Curse of Strahd can be played. This article should help out.

Available Campaigns For Season 4 & Curse of Strahd

Season 4 (DDAL04) and Curse of Strahd are playable by characters from the Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft campaigns.

ALAG 2026.2 (page 3):

CAMPAIGNS AVAILABLE Ravenloft and Forgotten Realms campaigns.

There is no rule indicating that an entire “table” must be from a single campaign, so Ravenloft and Forgotten Realms players may play at the same table.

This is your chance for a SCAG character to play with a VRgtR character.

However, they are still from different campaigns, so they still cannot do things that characters from separate campaigns cannot do, like trading magic items.

Stuck in Barovia

Once your character begins playing Curse of Strahd, they are “stuck in Barovia”.

ALPG 2026.2 (page 7):

Curse of Strahd (COS). Once an RV or FR character begins COS, they’re trapped in Barovia until their completion of COS, are given the option to leave Barovia in a DDAL04 one-shot adventure, or pay 20 DT to leave Barovia (a repeatable DT activity).

While trapped in Barovia, you may also participate in RV adventures set anywhere in the Domains of Dread as supplemental adventures played with COS.

This means that FR characters cannot play other Forgotten Realms adventures. However, FR and RV characters can play Ravenloft AL adventures. DDAL04 adventures are set in Barovia, so they continue to be available to FR characters.

And finally…

After ending play, RV characters may play other RV adventures and FR characters play FR adventures, including DDAL04.

Once Curse of Strahd is complete, FR characters return to the Forgotten Realms and RV characters continue to be limited to Ravenloft adventures.

Escape the Mists

You may have heard of this term. This is an old story award that has been removed from the AL documents. But it summarized the following rule.

Returning to the above ALPG text:

[…] or pay 20 DT to leave Barovia (a repeatable DT activity).

This means that while you’re “stuck in Barovia”, you may pay 20 Downtime Days to “Escape the Mists”. This means you can start playing Forgotten Realms adventures again. But the moment your character returns to Curse of Strahd, they are stuck again (and would require another 20 Downtime Days payment to escape).

Switching Campaigns From RV to FR

No. At no point can your Ravenloft characters play Forgotten Realms adventures. None of the AL rules permit this.

Switching Campaigns From FR to RV

No. At no point does your Forgotten Realms character “become” a Ravenloft Character. Only while playing Curse of Strahd are they permitted to play Ravenloft AL adventures, but they remain a Forgotten Realms character following all the rules for Forgotten Realms characters.
