Rebuilding Your Character

The ALPG allows you to rebuild any aspect of your character.

From the ALPG 2026.2 (page 2):

REBUILD Rebuild any aspect of your character, but keep their campaign and everything earned from play. Lose feature and class items from aspects they no longer possess. For example, a wizard rebuilt into a new class removes their class equipment spellbook, Bastion features they no longer meet the requirements for, and the spells learned from leveling, but keeps purchases and copied spells.

Change Any Aspect

You can change any aspect of your character, including:

Keep Your AL Campaign

Rebuilding your character does not allow you to change your character’s AL campaign. This means that your Forgotten Realms character cannot be rebuilt to a Dragonlance character, for example.

Keep Your Level

Your character does not change their level during a rebuild (neither up nor down).

Keep Your Rewards From Play

Your character keeps all rewards they earned from play. This also means you cannot change any “player choice” items (such as those earned from KGV). Those choices were made, they cannot be changed.

Your Gold Is Still Spent

If you purchased anything with gold, it’s still purchased. You don’t get any of that gold back.

Lose Feature and Class Items

Any items you have that were from your characters species or class(es), you lose. This is especially true for Artificers who can create Magic Items.

Check Your Bastion Special Facilities

When you rebuild your character, if any of your Bastion’s special facilities have prerequisites that are no longer met, you must replace them.

Wizard Spells

Any spells that you learned when you leveled-up are gone. However, any spells you copied from spellbooks or other characters are kept.

Level 5 Item

The level 5 item is considered “starting equipment”, and thus, can be changed.

Does the level 5 item count as starting equipment? For both arriving at level 5 and starting at level 5?

Correct. It’s not rewarded as part of play. Maybe think of it as AL Starting (at level 5) Equipment.

However, if you traded your level 5 item away, then you cannot change it. That would cause a temporal paradox and the universe would explode.

Can I Change My Character’s Name?

This is a relic of old AL rules. In older AL rules, your character’s name could not be changed. However, that rule is gone and you can change your character’s name at any time now.
