Adventurers League (AL) now requires all characters to be following the 2024 rules. If you have an existing 2014 character that needs to be rebuilt using 2024 rules, you can follow these instructions.

This is not the only way to do it, but it’s how I do it. Please note, this process does not talk about modifying your character in D&D Beyond, Roll20, etc. This is just the AL part of rebuilding.

Step 0: Create a Rebuild Log Entry

Do not modify old entries in your log to manage this rebuild.

In your AL log, create a new “Rebuild” entry using today’s date. Include information from this process in that log entry.

Step 1: “Give Back” Your Starting Equipment

Take a look at your AL log, way back at the beginning. You received starting equipment for your class and your background. Here, you’ll be “giving back” all that equipment.

Go through the items you received and remove them from your inventory. If you don’t have that item anymore (most likely you sold it at some point), then deduct half the cost of buying a new one using the prices in the 2014 version of the Players Handbook.

You also need to “give back” the gold you received from your 2014 background.

Step 2: Receive Your New Equipment

Receive Your New Class Equipment

Your 2024 class gives you new starting equipment. Add these to your inventory.

2024 classes give you the option of taking gold instead of equipment. You can do this instead if you want.

Receive Your New Background Equipment

Your 2024 background gives you new starting equipment. Add these to your inventory.

Step 3. Total It All Up

Return to your AL log entry and include all the additions and subtractions.

Total up your rebuilding gold and add (or subtract) that from your character’s gold.

If your character ends up in the negatives for gold, don’t worry about it. After an adventure or two, you’ll be gold-positive again.
