Frequently Asked Questions

Player Questions

Character Options

At what level can I create a character?

You can create a fresh AL-legal character at levels 1 or 5.

When you create a level-5 character, you are also given 40 downtime days. You can use those days to level-up your character to level 9.

Is the “PHB+1” rule still around?

No, it’s been gone for many years.

How many AL characters can I have?

You can have as many AL characters you want. There is no limit on the number of characters you can have. Some players have a single AL character they play with, while others have many. But each and every character must start as fresh characters following the rules in the ALPG.

Can I copy a character or make a duplicate of it?

No. You cannot copy/duplicate/branch your character. Each character must start at level 1 or 5. Each character must have their own distinct AL log.

What version of the Players Handbook (PHB) should I use?

All characters must now be created using the rules in the 2024 version of the Players Handbook. See 📏2024 or 2014 Rules?

Must I upgrade existing characters to the 2024 rules?

If you have a pre-existing character built from the 2014 version of the Players Handbook, you must rebuild that character to the 2024 rules before your next game. See 👷‍♀️Rebuilding a 2014 Character into a 2024 Character for my process.

Can I use any of the 2014 PHB subclasses?

If a subclass from the 2014 version of the Players Handbook has been rewritten in the 2024 version of the Players Handbook, then you must use the 2024 version.

If the subclass has not been rewritten, then you may use the 2014 version.

See 🧙‍♀️Classes and Subclasses for a list of valid classes and subclasses.

Can I use subclasses from other sourcebooks such as Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide, etc.?

These options are still available per the allowed sources listed in the ALPG.

Can I use the Critical Role Blood Hunter class?

No. The Blood Hunter is not in an AL-legal source book, even in the Critical Role AL campaign.

Can I use Silvery Barbs or other Strixhaven spells?

No. Strixhaven is not an AL-legal source book.

Can I use the Illrigger class?

No. Illrigger is not a legal class to use in AL.

Can I play a Warforged?

Yes, but only in the Eberron campaign. Warforged is not allowed in the other AL campaigns.

Magic Items

Can I benefit from more than one of the same Tomes or Manuals at the same time?

No. You can only benefit from one of each type of Tome or Manual. For example, you can only benefit from a single Tome of Understanding. But you can benefit from both a Tome of Understanding and a Manual of Quickness of Action.

Can I benefit from more than one Guardian item at the same time?

Ask your DM. There is a rule that states that a creature can be under the effect of a particular “effect” only once. The question is whether the Guardian minor property counts as an “effect” or whether Guardian on different magic items count as different “effects”. There is no single answer. Ask your DM.

What do I do with my silvered Longsword, +3, or other silvered magical items?

With the 2024 rules, silvered weapons are a specific magic item. So a Longsword, +3 that has been silvered isn’t AL-legal anymore. You must convert the item into a Longsword, +3 (very rare) OR a Silvered Longsword (common), your choice. Just make an entry in your AL logs indicating the item swap.

Firearms

Can I buy firearms (pistols or muskets)?

No. Firearms (including pistols and muskets) can only be acquired by finding one in an adventure as a static reward.

Can I craft firearms (pistols or muskets)?

No. Firearms (including pistols and muskets) can only be acquired by finding one in an adventure as a static reward.

Can I get a firearm from one of the “choice” rewards (like Giants of the Star Forge)?

No. Firearms cannot be chosen as a weapon type when choosing rewards. You must play an adventure that rewards a firearm to get a firearm.

I have a firearm. Can I buy bullets?

Yes. Mundane bullets cost 3 GP for a bundle of 10 and each bullet can be used only once.

I have a firearm. Can I buy smokepowder?

Yes. Smokepowder costs 50 GP for a packet of five shots.

Do bullets or smokepowder count towards my consumables limit?

Normal (mundane) bullets don’t count towards your consumable limit.

For magical bullets (+1, etc.), a bundle of 5 bullets (rounded up) count towards 1 consumable.

Smokepower counts towards your consumables limit. A bundle of 5 shots-worth of smokepowder (rounded up) counts as 1 consumable.

Campaigns

Can I play Curse of Strahd with a Forgotten Realms character?

Yes. Curse of Strahd is playable by characters in the Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft AL campaigns. However, playing Curse of Strahd does not allow you to cross into the other campaign.

Can I use the “Escape the Mists” downtime activity to move from the Ravenloft AL campaign to the Forgotten Realms campaign?

No. As of this writing, the text of “Escape the Mists” in the AL Adaptation Guide does mention leaving Ravenloft, so it is confusing. But it is not referring to the Ravenloft AL campaign; it is referring to the Ravenloft adventure setting (aka. Barovia).

If you created your character as a Ravenloft AL character, your character will be a Ravenloft character forever. It can never change into a Forgotten Realms character.

As a Forgotten Realms character, you can pay the Downtime Days to leave Barovia and play other Forgotten Realms adventures. This just means getting out of the Curse of Strahd hardcover to play other adventures in the Forgotten Realms AL campaign.

As a Ravenloft character, you can pay the Downtime Days to leave Barovia and play other Ravenloft AL campaign adventures. This just means getting out of the Curse of Strahd hardcover to play other adventures in the Ravenloft AL campaign.

Trading

Can I trade permanent magical items between my own characters?

Yes. You can trade permanent magical items between your own characters following the rules in the ALPG.

Can I trade consumable magical items?

No. Consumable magical items (potions, spell scrolls, etc.) cannot be traded.

If you have consumable magical items that your character cannot use, bring them to your games and allow the other characters at your table to use them. But even if you “give” them to another character at your table, they still come back with you after your game if they went unused.

Do both characters pay 5 Downtime Days when trading?

Yes. Each character involved in the trade is required to pay 5 Downtime Days. This is true even if both characters are your own characters.

Crafting

Can I Craft Magic Items?

Crafting of Magic Items (per the Crafting rules in the DMG) is not allowed. But there are a few ways you can craft a limited selection of common and uncommon Magic Items:

  • You’re allowed to craft Potions of Healing and Spell Scrolls per the rules in the 2024 version of the PHB. Spell scrolls cannot be upcast spells though. 2024 Player’s Handbook
  • You’re allowed to craft common and uncommon Magic Items through your Bastion’s Special Facilities. 🏰Bastions in AL
Can I Craft an Upcast Spell Scroll?

No. ALPG 15.1 states “Spell scrolls may not be upcast (e.g. 5th level cure wounds)”.

DM Questions

Service Awards

When I award an item to a character, must the item’s rarity match the character’s tier?

No. You can reward a Very Rare item to a T1 character (for example). However, DMs may request that you leave such items in your vault when you play.

This does not affect the restriction that Legendary items can only be used in T4 games.
