Adventure Choice Rewards
Some adventures allow players to choose Magic Item rewards. This article hopes to explain the reward choices available, depending on the adventure.
Default Choices
If an adventure allows you to pick your own Magic Item reward, these are the default rules you use.
From ALPG 2026.4 (page 5):
Player Choice Magic Items. If an adventure directs you to choose a magic item, it must be tier-appropriate, from the DMG, or a rewarded item from the adventure (not sentient or a permanent stat boost).
So, to summarize:
- It must be from the Dungeon Masters Guide or the adventure played.
- It must be tier-appropriate for the character (at the time they played the adventure), see below.
- It must not be sentient.
- It cannot permanently adjust ability scores (such as manuals and tomes).
Tier Appropriate
In addition, the item must be “tier appropriate”.
| Character Tier | Maximum Rarity |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Uncommon |
| Tier 2 | Rare |
| Tier 3 | Very Rare |
| Tier 4 | Legendary |
Other Adventures
Some adventures override the default choices. These are outlined in the ALAG. Some are highlighted below.
Keys From the Golden Vault
From the ALAG 2026.2 (page 5):
USING THE GOLDEN VAULT In exchange for completing their Golden Vault contract, during each adventure each character receives a magic item of their choice of a specific rarity as payment. The item is delivered to the characters the next day. This item must be campaign-available without permanently an ability score changes or granting wishes. The characters can never keep or benefit from the item they were sent to recover, though if the adventure offers a choice of whom to deliver it to, that choice remains.
So rewards from a Keys From the Golden Vault adventure are limited as follows:
- It must be from any source that’s campaign-available to the character (Dungeon Masters Guide is allowed).
- It must be a rarity specified by the adventure completed.
- It cannot permanently adjust ability scores (such as manuals and tomes).
- It cannot grant wishes.
- It cannot be the item the characters were sent to recover.
Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage
This adventure has a Downtime Activity when you complete a quest for House Moonstar. This Downtime Activity allows you to trade one of your Magic Items for another of your choice.
From the ALAG 2026.2 (page 27):
HOUSE MOONSTAR MAGIC ITEM TRADING (DOWNTIME ACTIVITY) House Moonstar offers any available, tier-appropriate item from an FR sourcebook for trade (player choice) with one exception; House Moonstar will not trade away any of its Moonblades. This Downtime activity can only be done once per character.
When you perform this Downtime Activity, you can choose any Magic Item, within limits:
- It must be from a Forgotten Realms sourcebook (Dungeon Masters Guide is allowed).
- It must be tier-appropriate (see the table above).
- It must not be a Moonblade.
